The Paediatric Outpatient Department at Khayelitsha District Hospital (KDH) sees on average 200 children per month; the children who come to this clinic are some of the most disabled and marginalised within the Khayelitsha community. Waiting periods are unfortunately long and, until now, children and their carers had nothing to occupy them while waiting to receive care. Hospital staff identified an unused area outside the department that we have transformed into a fun, educational, interactive space where children can play while waiting for their appointments.
Thanks to generous contributions from The Crazy Store and the GC Rieber Foundation, as well as funds raised by staff and friends, the play area was completed in December 2024, and officially opened by Mr James Kruger (Director of Khayelitsha Eastern Sub-structure). Transforming this drab area has brought a sense of joy and fun to KDH's children, caregivers and staff. In realising this dream, Friends of KDH has given hope to staff and fostered the belief that positive change is possible in the hospital.
