A Place of Quiet

A space offering solace for grieving families

Not every woman’s labour goes smoothly and ends with the birth of a healthy baby. Sadly, many mothers have to endure the pain of losing a child through stillbirth, early pregnancy loss or neonatal death. We identified the need for a comforting and quiet space in the Labour Ward at Khayelitsha District Hospital (KDH), where mothers and families receiving bad news and dealing with loss, can navigate their sorrow and find comfort.

The Labour Ward at KDH had a small room that was used for this purpose, and we launched a project to fundraise and upgrade the space so as to create a warm environment with a sense of peace, tranquillity and emotional support.

We were delighted that Truworths decided to back this exciting initiative, and we quickly got to work with Pam Shaw - an interior decorator and supporter of Friends of KDH - re-imaging the room into a beautiful, private space. Walls were painted in peaceful shades; a comfortable couch positioned under a stunning painting donated by local artist, Claudia Treagus; blinds and soft furnishings installed; lighting softened…and before we knew it, the little room was transformed into an oasis.

In September 2024, we officially opened the Quiet Room and thanked Truworths for their incredibly generous support that allowed us to turn this dream into a reality. At the opening event, we heard from the Labour Ward Operations Manager, Sister Seyisana, the Consultant Obstetrician, Dr Christine Els, and one of our volunteer Labour Companions, Lelethu Mvumvu - who all confirmed that the Quiet Room is already having an enormously positive impact. We hope that it will bring a little light to those affected by loss.
