Supporting Staff

Empowering training for KDH staff and volunteers

Khayelitsha District Hospital (KDH) would be nothing without the committed individuals who work in challenging circumstances to bring health and care to the Khayelitsha community. We are so grateful to Pam Sneddon and Xolile Makutoana from The Fincoach Foundation for partnering with us and delivering a brilliant training programme in May 2024 for a group of KDH staff and our three volunteer Labour Companions.

The curriculum, that came from The Fincoach Foundation’s Job Journey course, provided a rich and uplifting learning experience. Participants learnt more about themselves, identifying personal strengths and weaknesses and looking at topics such as integrity and character. From a workplace point of view, they discussed why volunteering is key, as well as work ethic, the value of work and how to overcome stumbling blocks and deal with conflict.

The Friends of KDH volunteers are assisting in the labour ward, offering support to women in labour and easing the burden of overworked staff in this very busy department – over 400 babies are born each month at KDH! The Labour Companion volunteers thoroughly enjoyed the training sessions with The Fincoach Foundation and shared very positive feedback:

“I learnt how to communicate with different people, also how to build my confidence.”
"A bond was formed with the other ladies that will continue even after the course has ended.”
“I learnt a lot, especially to stand up for truth, no matter what.”

“I found the course very helpful; we learned so many things from knowing yourself to knowing your rights in a working environment.”

“I enjoyed the group work exercises which helped with my confidence.”

On completion, we celebrated the volunteers - who received certificates acknowledging their Job Journey training - and we thanked Pam, Xolile and Nolu from The Fincoach Foundation for offering their time and knowledge and inspiring all those involved. They encouraged everyone to show up, keep persevering and develop an “I can” attitude!

We are also grateful to the Cape Spice Emporium in Claremont that donated sweet treats which added to the celebration!
