Supporters were invited to help us make Christmas a little brighter for 100 brave Khayelitsha children who live with severe chronic illnesses. These children are regular visitors to KDH for tests, procedures or difficult treatments. Our goal was simple and hopeful: 100 children, 100 Christmas gifts.
Thanks to an overwhelmingly generous response, that goal was not only met — it was achieved in just 10 days.
Friends of KDH is always proud to support our Paediatric team, who once again led the way in hosting a joyful Christmas celebration for these brave children where each child received their own gift.
The event was led by Caitlyn, the Community Service doctor in Paediatrics this year, but it was very much a team effort. Tara and Dana Varney, took on the enormous task of shopping for, wrapping, and packaging all 100 Christmas gifts. By spreading the word in their estate and among their mums’ friends, they rallied additional donations that helped make this effort so successful.
More than 100 children and their parents or caregivers attended. Each child was treated to hotdogs, cupcakes, ice cream, a drink, and a beautifully decorated Christmas cupcake, as well as a new item of clothing and, of course, their very own Christmas gift.
When rain on the day forced the celebration indoors, the Paediatric ward was transformed into a warm, festive space. The hospital corridors came alive with laughter and music as a marimba band got everyone dancing. The Allied Health team ran playdough activities and face painting, while a magician and a jumping castleadded to the excitement. For a few precious hours, the ward was filled with smiles, fun, and pure joy.
It was a day of celebration — a reminder of the power of community and kindness, especially in a hospital setting. We loved being part of it, and we are deeply grateful to every supporter who helped make this moment possible and provide an unforgettable experience for 100 children and their families.
